This Song Is A Mess But So Am I - Church Point, LA

This Song Is A Mess But So Am I, besides having one of the longest names for a solo project ever, is Freddy Ruppert's experiemtnal electronic project. Church Point, LA would be his debut album in 2004. Just like all his further work to come, his work seems to feel much like a personal diary.

There's no adherence to usual conventions to his song writing style. It feels more organic, as if he put out the album in the exact order as he wrote the songs. By doing this, it feels very much like he's caught a very accurate and intimate snapshot of his life and state of mind exactly in that moment. The songs tend to very sparatic in nature and jump tempo and moods from track to track. If you're not feeling extremely adventurous musically, you'd probably want to skip this one. Otherwise, it makes a great album if you're not a passive music listener. For example, if you have a sunn album and have listened to it more than once, you're a perfect canidate.

The album tackles very personal subjects concerning Freddy's struggle with his mother's death and trying to rectify the idea of an all-loving God that would allow this to happen. There's no imagery, no polish, nothing to hide the bare emotions and message. This Song... remains a straight talker  in each song, and he shows no restraint in what he wants to tell the world. In "Song for Donna Ruppert" has curses God for his failure to answer his mother's prayers as she faces death as he yells for God to not fail him this time. Another stand out track, "Bedridden and Dancing" is another uptempo song that is structured more like a song that also touches on the issue of death and family. As you make yourr way through the rest of the album you will pick up that bands like New Order, Joy Division, and Morrissey/The Smiths played an influential role in his writing. Although, this will probably not be too obvious at first amidst all the noise.

Since Freddy Ruppert had originally posted up his full album for download, I will take that as a go ahead to make sure that his music sticks around that much longer.
